#2 – Memoir

Well, my friends wanted to go white river rafting. I didn’t want to; I’m kind of a coward. I ended up coming anyways, though. When we arrived at Martins Rapids, we unloaded the rafts and got them ready for our adventure. Our raft guide sat in the back, because he didn’t want to get wet. I was somewhere on one of the sides. I noticed, to my dismay, that one of the other people on the raft was a bit unreliable. Martin’s Rapids aren’t too dangerous though, so I didn’t think it was too important at the time. We went through just fine the first time, though we ended up going in backwards (Poor raft guide!). The second time didn’t go so well. Everyone chose the same positions, including the raft guide, who claimed that going in backwards was just an unlucky fluke. There was a particular hole that we were supposed to look out for, and which we were supposed to hit fast and head on.
Unfortunately, Mr Unreliable fell down about 20 seconds beforehand. This would be understandable, except for the fact that he fell under the delusion that he couldn’t get back up. The direct result of this: We had two people rowing on one side, and one on the other. Instead of hitting the hole fast and head on, we hit it slow and going sideways. This resulted in us getting badly stuck on top of the hole and against the rock, with the raft almost completely underwater and at an 80 Degree angle with the earth. It also flung the raft guide and Mr. Unreliable out of the raft with force, but they landed in a safe spot. This was not like us. We were in a spot where if we tried to swim for it, the current would have a good chance of drowning us, despite our life jackets. It was an awkward position with the raft almost flipping. Naturally, this caused no small amount of panic among the remaining passengers of the raft. After about thirty seconds of very scary clinging for our lives to the raft, we finally broke loose to safety. And what did the other rafting group say? “I really wish I’d brought a waterproof camera; you should have seen your faces!”

I have also read Cole’s Memoir and Jacob’s Memoir.

Johnathan I liked your blog alot. It was very descriptive and I liked how you read it that day to. You found lots of ways to make your story good like you put funny parts in it but it was a serious story. I think you did a great job.

Johnathon, that was over a year ago. Why are you still bitter about the fact that Mr. Unreliable (and I know who you are talking about) got you a little wet. You went to a freaking river! What did you think was going to happen? lol
    Who was the guide? David?

I liked this memoir a lot. The rapids can get really scary sometimes… I’m glad you all made it out ok. And the very end of the story was hilarious because I could have just been the one that would have said that.
